Welcome to the web site for CLS 844, Advanced Clinical Chemistry, a course
for distance learners. Advanced Clinical Chemistry explores specialized
clinical chemistry testing, including toxicology, therapeutic drug monitoring, and
endocrine function as well as quality assurance issues. The theory and evaluation of
methodologies involved in the quantitation of these substances and compounds are discussed
in lecture and demonstrated in laboratory. Advanced Clinical Chemistry is a
four credit hour course at the University of Kentucky.
CLS 844 is divided into nine content areas:
Quality Assurance in Clinical Chemistry
Immunoassay in Clinical Chemistry
Arterial Blood Gas (ABG) Measurement
Vitamins & Minerals
Therapeutic Drug Monitoring
Toxicology
Special Techniques in Clinical Chemistry
Endocrinology I
Endocrinology II
There are four assignments for each content area:
Read the text assignment
The required text is: Burtis, CA & Ashwood, ER, Eds. Tietz
Fundamentals of Clinical Chemistry. Philadelphia: WB Saunders Co. 1996. (ISBN
0-7216-3763-9)
The text is available at the University of Kentucky Medical Center Bookstore,
(606)257-2947. Staff at the bookstore will take your order by telephone and mail

Complete the on-site assignment
Your exercises are available on this web site.
Take the exam
Exams will be given during the lab meeting or by approved proctors.
In addition, you will complete one student laboratory. Lab topics include:
Blood gas measurement
Chromatography
Electrophoresis
You will also present one case study in written and oral form. The format for
the case study is listed in the assignments section of this web site.
Finally, you will complete a two-day enrichment experience at the Special Chemistry
and Toxicology Laboratories of UK Medical Center in Lexington, KY. The practicum
experience will be individually scheduled.
Advanced Clinical Chemistry is a distance learning activity. Although the course
instructor is available by telephone and by e-mail for help, each student is largely
responsible for individual progress and mastery.
